Sydler Electronics contributes towards automation for Zero Liquid Discharge Water Treatment Plants

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) is a water treatment which constitutes a series of processes, in which the plant discharges no effluent fluids into water systems. This helps to completely eliminate the environmental pollution, that are associated with traditional water treatment plants.

ZLD makes effective use of wastewater by recycling and reuse, resulting in water conservation as the demand for fresh water is reduced.

Process plants, such as bulk drug manufacturers, textile factories, chemical and fertilizer plants etc. regularly face challenges with respect to water supply, water costs and environmental regulations.

Zero discharge solutions are obtained by concentrating the effluent, using techniques such as membrane-based systems and multiple effect evaporation-based systems; followed by recovery and recycling of water.  Some of the processes are Thermal (evaporation and crystallizing), Reverse Osmosis (membrane technology) and Electro-dialysis.

All ZLD systems typically face most of the following challenges:

  • Constant manpower requirement
  • De-rating
  • Redundancy
  • Uniform operating approach
  • Efficient power usage

Irrespective of the ZLD system in use, solving these issues will improve capacity and efficiency, while reducing maintenance.

As part of high capacity ZLD, the RO control systems involve high pressure membranes, requiring powerful pumps with redundancies. The associated instrumentation monitors the process input/output parameters and provides its feedback to run the process optimally. It thus ensures optimal usage of power too, that is duly monitored.

Similarly, evaporator power control too is very important, as thermal energy could depend on electrical power, totally or partially, which needs to be monitored vis-a-vis the output.

Modern power control techniques coupled with automation, remote monitoring & control, applied to ZLD can meet most of the above challenges.

The iOT approach optimizes the operating parameters through various online instrumentation data captured in the process.

Sydler Electronics, through its knowledge of power control and rich experience in process automation with iOT based remote monitoring, offers comprehensive solutions in ZLD process automation.

They are ETP/STP Automation systems, UF Controllers, High Pressure RO controllers, Multi Point Pumping Control and Flow Monitoring, Solar Pumping Solutions etc. With real time monitoring of data and alerts management and reporting water and power audits are made simple. This contributes in operating the system at peak efficiency. The data analytics helps take decisions for maintenance, repairs and improvement of process methodology.
